Fullerenes or buckyballs are a new allotrope of carbon characterized by a closed-cage structure. The chemical and physical properties of fullerenes have been important topic in the field of research and development. Buckeyballs and carbon nanotubes have opened the door to a vast range of carbon-based materials with some extremely useful properties. Fullerene derivatives are found to exhibit fascinating electronic, mechanical, charge transfer, photophysics and photovoltaic device properties, they also exhibit thermodynamic stability. Fullerene derivatives act as HIV-1 inhibitors, antimicrobial, antioxidants and neuroprotective agents. The present article discusses the structure, curvature, shielding effect, properties, computational data, current research, biological application and mass spectroscopy of fullerenes.
